It's summer and the kids are out of school. It’s a time to run and play. It’s a time to enjoy family and friends in the warm sunshine. It’s time to wring the most out of every second of your summer vacation. But what are we to do when the weather gets too hot to play out outside?
Many times, the extreme is unwise to play in. It makes us listless and the more we stay out in it, the more danger we risk heat exposure and heat stroke due to dehydration.
And if it affects a healthy adult in such a manner, the easier it will be to affect our children. So, what are we to do to keep our family cool, healthy, and entertained during these extremely hot days of summer?
Here are a few fantastically fun ideas to keep everyone happy, cool, and refreshed when the sun blazes on outside. It is always fun to invite the kid’s friends over.
It is doubly fun to simply enjoy your time with your kids together on your own. On extremely hot days, great fun can be had inside the house with just a little imagination and a lot of laughter.
It’s all about fun and games. Whether you are playing board games, video games, cards, or games such as marbles, pick-up sticks, etc., you will have as much fun as your kids and enjoy the experience. Spend some time and have fun plus make some memories to remember for a long time to come.
Perhaps your kids have video games? Have you played them with your kids? Pop some popcorn and make some smoothies and enjoy finger foods while you all take turns playing your favorite game of choice. Another fun game to play is charades!
There is nothing better, every once in a while, than a movie marathon at home. Grab the kids and snacks and cozy up in front of the TV for your favorite movies or experience new titles. Choose movies that you both will enjoy and make selections that are age appropriate for all your kids.
Enjoy DVD’s from your own library or rent some new movies for the day. Choose a movie on a television network, or one offered by your television cable company. Chances are, there are titles that you kids have been wanting to see. Now is the perfect time to watch them.
Watching television shows with your kids is a great alternative to movie time. It is also the perfect time to screen the shows that your kids enjoy. Play games while you watch, giggle, and have some fun.
3. ARTS AND CRAFTS
Have you put away projects for some unidentified time? Now is the perfect time to drag them out and accomplish them together. Scrapbooking, sewing, and painting are all awesome activities to do with your kids as well as many others.
Make a model or try a science experiment together. Enjoying something constructive inspires learning and doing it as a family strengthens family bonds.
4. SOCK ADVENTURES
Are you up for a controlled in-house adventure? Rolled up socks make great indoor “snowballs”. Divide into teams and let the games begin. Play capture the flag with them. Each team has their own room and flag that they must protect.
The team that captures the other team’s flag wins. Variations can be made and other physical games can be played for some safe and delightful fun.
5. COOKING AND BAKING
A lot of fun can be had in the kitchen. Making kid friendly recipes for dinner or snack time. Kids feel proud when they accomplish something and when you do it together; they also feel loved. Make age-appropriate recipes.
For younger kids, choose tasty treats that they will love to eat. For the older kids, try something with a little challenge to it. Learning to cook and bake is fun to do. It is also a life skill and will stay with them the rest of their lives.
Have your kids make the evening meal. Handmake a pizza or burgers. Older kids can even learn to grill out.
