Without proper ventilation, there is no way an air cooler can function efficiently. There are people that make the mistake of assuming that air coolers, like air conditioners, will work better when the room it is meant to cool is properly locked up.
This is not the case, really. Due to the way they operate, air coolers need constant airflow in order to keep the room cool. They take in hot air, pass it through the cooling pads where the evaporation occurs, and produce cool air as a result.
This mechanism demands constant airflow and without proper ventilation, it cannot be achieved. There is a need, therefore, to ensure proper ventilation, and it is better to place the air cooler in front of the window to obtain the amount of ventilation needed to sustain the cooling of the room.
The constancy of airflow ensures that evaporative cooling happens faster and this means better efficiency. Proper ventilation is also important to prevent moisture buildup which reduces the efficiency of air coolers.

Air Cooler Maintenance

Maintenance is pretty much easy and cheap. The essential thing to do is to clean the cooling pads from time to time to ensure that they are in a good condition to enhance cooling. The cooling pads can collect dust, pollens, and other impurities present in the air.
It is therefore imperative that you clean them at least once in a month. The frequency can increase based on your location or the severity of the weather condition.
You can also replace the pads when you feel they can’t function efficiently. It is equally important to clean the water tank and ensure that they have adequate water at all times.
Ensuring the Water Level
As has been explained earlier, the air cooler uses water to achieve cooling and it is essential that you keep the water in the tank at the ideal level to ensure that there is enough to run the unit.
Without adequate water, the unit will not produce the cool air you require. There is also the risk of breakdown if the unit is made to run without adequate water.
There are some air coolers equipped with water level alarm that indicates when water drops below the recommended level. If your unit is one of such, never neglect this warning sound even for a moment.
If your air cooler is not equipped with water alarm system, always check the water level and make sure it doesn’t drop so much as to pose danger to your unit.
Add Ice to the Water
If you have a proper understanding of how air coolers work, you can easily relate to how adding ice will improve the efficiency of your unit. You don't necessarily have to do it but it will definitely make it more effective.
The colder the water, the better the rate of cooling that will result from the hot air passing through the cooling pads. There are actually some air coolers that have dedicated ice compartments, but if yours doesn’t have, you can improve cooling by adding some quantity of ice to the water.
It is not advisable, however, to add too much ice as it can slow down the evaporation process. Add a little quantity of ice on a really hot day to improve efficiency.
