Fun Summer Activities for You and Your Furry Pet

Last updated Feb. 14, 2020

For most people, there is no better time to enjoy the outdoor environment than in the summer season.

The bright sunny days are great for several activities and many people use the period to relax and maybe take a vacation.

If you are like most people who love the summer, there are many fun activities to enjoy. What if you have a pet and want to have these fun with it?

The truth is that pets love to have fun as much as we do or even more. But are your summer activities also suitable for your furry pets?

Considering that dogs and cats have fur and find it more difficult than humans to beat the heat, you have to consider some summer safety tips for your pets when making plans for your summer activities.

To help make things easier for you, here are some fun summer activities you can enjoy with your furry friends safely:

Morning Hike

A morning hike is one of the most rewarding activities you can embark with your dog. Knowing that the temperature will start getting tougher towards noon, head out in the earliest hours of the day for hiking.

You can choose a path you or the dog haven’t been on before and enjoy the experience.

Do not forget to pack your backpack with plenty of snacks and water. With your dog by your side, your morning hike will be safer and more fun.

A Visit to the Dog Park

If you have a dog park in your locality, paying a visit can be one of the best summer activities you can enjoy with your furry pet.

Most dog parks are highly safe so you can confidently remove the leash and watch your pet run around happily with other dogs.

You can also visit any well-known dog-friendly park even if it is not expressly designated as a dog park. Your dog may have more fun than you in such places but it is all right.

Swimming is one of the commonest activities people engage in the summer. It is one of the most fun and fulfilling activities when the sun is unleashing its fury.

It is important, however, that you ascertain that your pet loves swimming before taking it to the ocean or even a swimming pool.

While most dogs love to swim, some are not comfortable with the idea and you should never make your dog apprehensive all the name of summer fun.

Almost every dog loves to play Frisbee. They are mostly better than humans at catching things and you should give your dog to enjoy this activity.

Choose an open field and a time that is convenient like evening hours. You can ward some treat to make the dog happier during the exercise.

Frisbee can be a lot more fun when you have two or more dogs running around trying to catch the Frisbee.

Sprinkler Time

This is an excellent activity you can enjoy with your furry pet right in your lawn or garden. If you have a little kid who enjoys running through sprinklers, this can be a fun family activity with your pets.

Most dogs love sprinklers and will eagerly run around for fun. Even if your dog is not too interested in the sprinkler, it may find it a lot more interesting to chase you or your kid through sprinklers.

Hide and Seek Indoors

During the hottest hours of the day when it is not advisable to step outside, playing hide and seek indoors can be a lot of fun for you and your furry friend.

The experience will even be better when your child is playing too. Hold the dog until the little one has hidden then let the dog go find him/her.

A Visit to the Beach

Chances are that a visit to the beach is already on your bucket list. This is what most people do all the time with their dogs.

It is even more beneficial for you and your furry pets in the summer when the sun is shining brightly and you are in no mood to stay indoors.

There are lots of activities you can engage in while visiting the beach. Do not forget to enjoy nice treats with your dog while playing around the beach.

An Obstacle Course in the Backyard

If you and your dog badly want an outdoor activity but want to remain within the house, an obstacle course in the backyard can do the trick.

You can build a DIY backyard obstacle course with such simple materials as cardboard boxes, play tunnels, and hula hoop and a pool noodle.

An obstacle course can also be a game for two or more individuals, including your furry pets.

Stand Up Paddle Board

This is one of the most nerve-racking experiences your dog will have the summer when you do it the right way. Most dogs will enjoy the experience at the end of the day.

Most stand up paddleboards just happen to fit more than one person. You can bring your small furry friend onboard. Make sure that the dog is properly kitted though.

Go Shopping Together

Summer is also a good time to shop. You can also go shopping with your dog but make sure that the mall you are visiting is dog-friendly.

You can also visit regular dog shops to get some of the supplies your furry friends need.

Go Camping

Camping is another fulfilling and fun activity you should consider this summer. Find parks and campsites that are open to pets and take your friend there for the time of its life.

You should also endeavour to go with all the goodies that will make the dog cherish the experience. Do not neglect your own needs during camping either.

Canoeing is an interesting water activity and you shouldn’t have all the fun without your furry pets.

While canoeing is an adventure, make sure the water is clear and shallow when you have your dog onboard. If you must venture further, make sure that your dog is wearing a doggy life vest.

Take Care of Your Pet

The summer is also the time to take good care of your pets. You will have the time to groom them, treat them to their favourite treats and take them to groomers and/or vets. You should also stay at a pet-friendly hotel if you are travelling with them.

In everything you do, make sure that your furry pets are comfortable at all times of the day.

Some of the activities above can be exhausting so make sure you have snacks and cool fresh water available for your dog or cat.

You should also cool the air for their sakes. While your normal home air cooler will be great when you are at home, you can think of a pet-friendly portable air cooler for the season.
