Spring has sprung and nature is lovely. Birds are singing, the flowers are blooming and the weather is warm and inviting. It is wonderful to get out of the house and enjoy the sunshine. We feel the need to get active in a project. We feel the need to improve ourselves and our surroundings.
This is the time of year that we begin to deep clean out homes, purge out old and superfluous belongings and look forward to new creative ways to begin the new season. Home improvements centres stock up on home projects to tantalize our need to create.
Parks open for the year and advertise beautiful flower-filled hikes. Have you been getting the springtime jitters to dig into a new project or activity this spring?
Maybe you feel the need but just don’t know which fun spring activity to start wit or even have a clue as to an activity that you would like to try. We have come up with four refreshing outdoor activities to do this spring. Each is geared for family adventure and quality time with your loved ones.
Is it time for some outdoor projects that you have been meaning to start but never have? What a great season to build on a deck or a bricked in braai. Add a pool, it doesn’t have to be an expensive permanent pool, why not an above the ground model?
Gardening is another beautiful way to improve your home and get excited about spring. Begin a project to teach your kids how to grow their own food. Spring is the perfect time to plant a bumper crop of delicious and nutritious fruits and vegetables that will sustain your family throughout the summer and fall.
You do not need a large backyard for a garden. Many can be grown in pots on the patio. You can even plant herbs and spices in the front yard and landscape them in with your other foliage. Plant flower beds with a vibrant display of flowers and plants. You can even plant trees.
Add stepping stone walkways and do some improvements such as fixing an old sprinkler system or broken fencing. These can be done by the homeowner and do not have to be contracted out by expensive experts.
Many home improvement centres carry all you need to tackle these projects yourself at a fraction of the cost and the family can all participate which makes for some family fun!
TAKE IT TO THE PARKS
Spring is the perfect time of year to enjoy the outdoors and gorgeous displays of the season can usually be observed at your nearest state park. They are opening this time of year and gearing up for the beautiful spring. Waterfalls are flowing and the wildflowers are out in abundance. Animals have now ended their hibernation and their babies are out in abundance.
But if you see any, do not touch them! The spring sunshine and warmth is perfect for picnics, ziplining or simply watching the sunset. It is also a gorgeous time for nature hikes. These are perfect for the whole family.
Trails are usually organized and separated according to skill level. Choose an easy one if you have young children or go for more of a challenge with an all adult group.
Be sure that you stay safe on your hike and pack one backpack per person. In each backpack include enough water for that person, enough portable and non-perishable foods for one day’s worth of nutrition, one change of clothes, a first aid kit, jacket, insect spray and a flashlight.
Make sure to tell a relative or friend who is not on the day trip, where you will be and who to call in case of emergency. Include a map in your backpack as well as a backup battery for a cellphone and a baggie to slip your phone into to keep it waterproof.
Going for a bike ride with the family is a great way to unwind after a busy day. You can ride bikes around the neighbourhood or plan a local day trip for the weekend and take your bikes out. Experience spring in a phenomenal way on the bike in the warmth of the sun smelling the heady sweet fragrance of flowers blooming all around.
Be sure to stay safe and keep the group together.Bike helmets are a great way to stay safe as well as knee and elbow pads. Take a backpack with you with waters and a few snacks, maybe a first aid kit in case it is needed.
If you ride at sunset, wear bright coloured clothing so drivers can see you at twilight. This is truly a wonderful family activity that gets everyone out of the house and experiencing life and nature together as a group.
When was the last time you flew a kite? There are some gorgeous kites on the market. Find a windy spring day and take the kids to a safe and open area such as a local park. Prepare your kite and let it fly! Give each child a turn to man the strings. See how high and far you can take it.
How long can you keep it in the air? Bring more than one kit and have a race. It is amazing how such a simple and peaceful pastime can bring cherished memories that will last your family for years to come. Bring a picnic with you.
Spread a blanket out on the ground and enjoy the colourful outdoors together. You can go in the evening then stay for the brilliant spring night sky filled with stars. This is an amazing time of year for stargazing. Print out a map of the stars and see if you can find some of the constellations.
Spring is a magical season. It doesn’t take a lot of money to enjoy it with your family. All it takes is some imagination, creativity and some special time set aside to spend with those you love the most.
