Cooling Tips For Your Pets

Last updated Oct. 7, 2016

It can be a bit of a challenge to stay cool under the summer heat. Most of us will go to great lengths to keep ourselves cool and comfortable as the summer sun beats down. We want to keep ourselves and our loved ones well and happy and the cool shade is what is required when temperatures soar. We want to do the same for our animals as well. Our pets are family too and must be looked after as the days heat up. It just takes a little extra care to keep our fur babies happy and healthy all summer long. Here are a few tips to help you keep your pet cool and inspired.

Pets need water just as people do! If you keep your pet outside while you go to work or if he is outside all the time, make sure he has enough to drink to last him through the day. Remember that water evaporates in the heat. Your pet will also be thirstier the more he sits out in the sun. For these reasons, it is a great idea to put out more than one bowl of water. Add some ice cubes to their bowl for extra relief.

Keeping your pet inside during the hot summer months is the ideal thing to do, however, circumstances cannot always be ideal, can they? For those pets that must stay outside while we are away during the day, a provided shelter is a must. Pets suffer from dehydration and heatstroke much quicker than humans do. So, whether you set up a shady spot in your yard by the porch, in a doghouse, or under a tree, always make sure that the space in the shade to provide your animal with a source of relief from the summer heat. Also, pets with short or light-colored coats can sunburn easily.

If you and your pet enjoy your daily exercise together, make sure you do so in the cool part of the day. This means exercising in the morning or the evening. On days with extreme heat, just keep your fur baby inside and do not go out to exercise that day. Remember your pet walks barefooted. Even though he may have rough pads on the bottoms of his feet, hot asphalt and pavement can burn a dog’s feet very quickly. Another thing to consider is that animals with short noses and muzzles can have a difficulty breathing in the heat. It is a good idea not to push these breeds too hard in the heat. Just let them rest.

Pets do better inside the home during the hot months of the year. While inside, provide them with fresh water and a place where they can lay down. Animals need their special spaces just as people do. Make sure this space gets plenty of air and is well ventilated.

Air Coolers

Notice air conditioners are not mentioned here. That is because the air conditioner can dry out your pet’s skin and coat, leaving them itchy and miserable in the summer as we tend to run our conditioners more then than any other time of year. An air cooler, on the other hand, is perfect for pets because they emit a small amount of moisture into your home that will help to relieve summer distress on your pet’s skin, coat, and sinuses.

Pets need our help just as children do. They need constant love and well-being. They need proper care and a lifetime of love. Keep your pets out of the heat and in the shade and cool this summer season. They would do the same for you. Remember do not leave them in a hot car even for a few minutes while you run into the store. Temperatures soar to fatal temperatures within a matter of seconds and your pets cannot save themselves. Keep them safe and protect them. They are our responsibility and our blessing. Keep them cool and healthy this summer and they will give you unconditional love in return.
